3,500 lb Axles - 10 inch x 2-1/4 inch Brake
This is one of the most common axle configurations on single-axle utility, boat, and cargo trailers.
Bearings
| Position | Dexter Kit Number | Industry Cup/Cone |
|----------|-------------------|-------------------|
| Inner | K71-390-00 | L68111 / L68149 |
| Outer | K71-306-00 | L44610 / L44649 |

|-------------------|---------------|----------------|
| 5, or 6 bolt hub | K71-303-00 | K71-303-00 |
5,200 lb Axles - 12 inch x 2 inch Brake
At 5,200 lb capacity the inner bearing steps up to a significantly larger unit. This bearing is shared across several heavier axle ratings as well.

6,000 lb Axles - 12 inch x 2 inch Brake
Dexter offers two hub configurations at 6,000 lb. The 6-bolt demount and the 8-bolt hub use different outer bearings, so make sure you identify your hub before ordering.
6-Bolt Hub

| Inner | K71-308-00 | 25520 / 25580 |
| Outer | K71-309-00 | 15245 / 15123 |
8-Bolt Hub
| Position | Dexter Kit Number | Industry Cup/Cone |
|----------|-------------------|-------------------|
| Inner | K71-308-00 | 25520 / 25580 |
| Outer | K71-310-00 | 14276 / 14125A |

7,000 lb Axles - 12 inch x 2 inch Brake
The 7,000 lb axle is very common on tandem axle cargo and equipment trailers. Like the 6,000 lb axle, hub bolt count affects which outer bearing you need.
8-Bolt Hub
| Position | Dexter Kit Number | Industry Cup/Cone |
|----------|-------------------|-------------------|
| Inner | K71-308-00 | 25520 / 25580 |

A Few Things to Know Before You Order
Some seals are 2.165 ID. On some axles brands the inner diameter of the seal is 2.165 instead of the standardized Dexter 2.25. Be sure to check your ID of the seal. The OD will be the same.
Bearings always come in sets. A cup and cone must always be replaced together. Never install a new cone into a worn cup or a new cup with a worn cone. The races wear together and mismatching them accelerates failure.
Identify your hub bolt count before ordering. Several axle capacities, particularly in the 6,000 to 7,000 lb range, use different outer bearings depending on whether the hub is a 6-bolt, or 8-bolt configuration. Getting this wrong means the bearing will not fit.
Seals should be replaced any time the hub comes off. The seal part numbers listed above apply to both standard and E-Z Lube spindles at each capacity level. The oil seal is a separate part number used only on oil-bath hubs, which are available on some larger axle capacities.
The inner bearing is shared across a wide range. You will notice that the 25520/25580 inner bearing covers everything from 5,200 lb through 7,200 lb capacity. The outer bearing is where the differences are, and it is the outer bearing that most commonly gets mixed up at the parts counter.
E-Z Lube axles still need periodic inspection. The E-Z Lube system lets you repack bearings without pulling the hub, which is a convenience feature, but it does not replace the need to pull the hub and inspect the bearings, cups, and seal on a regular schedule. Plan on doing a full inspection every 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What bearing does a 3,500 lb trailer axle use?
For a standard Dexter 3,500 lb axle, the inner bearing is Dexter kit K71-390-00 (L68111 cup / L68149 cone) and the outer is K71-306-00 (L44610 cup / L44649 cone). These are among the most common trailer bearings and cross-reference to Timken, SKF, and National part numbers.
What inner bearing do 5,200 lb through 7,000 lb Dexter axles share?
All Dexter axles from 5,200 lb through 7,000 lb capacity use the same inner bearing: Dexter kit K71-308-00, which uses the 25520 cup and 25580 cone. Only the outer bearing and sometimes the seal differ between these axle ratings.
Do I need to replace bearings and races together?
Yes. Bearing cones and cups (races) are matched sets that wear together. Installing a new cone on a used race — or a new race with a used cone — causes rapid uneven wear and premature failure. Always replace as a complete matched set.
What is the difference between standard, E-Z Lube, and oil bath hubs?
Standard hubs require the bearings to be removed and repacked with grease manually. E-Z Lube hubs have a grease fitting at the spindle tip for relubrication without disassembly. Oil bath hubs run the bearings in a reservoir of oil. All three configurations use the same bearing part numbers but require different seals.
Do Dexter UFP Vault hubs use the same bearings as standard hubs?
No. Vault hubs use a sealed oil-bath system with different internal specifications. If your boat trailer has Dexter or UFP Vault hubs, see our dedicated [Vault Hub part numbers guide for 3.7K and 4.2K axles](/blog/dexterufp-vault-hub-part-numbers-for-37k-and-42k-trailer-axles) for the correct parts.
