Trailer lighting faults are almost always a ground, a connector, or a chafed wire — rarely the bulbs themselves. Driving with dead lights is unsafe and illegal, but you can usually find the fault in under an hour by working through the system in order instead of swapping parts at random.

Step-by-Step
Step 1: Confirm the problem is on the trailer
Plug into a known-good vehicle or test the truck's connector with a test light. If the truck side reads correct voltage on each pin, the fault is on the trailer.
Step 2: Clean and inspect the connector
Unplug the 7-pin or flat connector and look for corrosion, bent pins, or melted plastic. Clean the contacts with a wire brush and contact cleaner, then apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.
Step 3: Check the ground first
Most trailer light problems are ground problems. Find the white ground wire's attachment point on the frame, remove it, sand the metal to bare shiny steel, and reattach it tight. Add a fresh ground if the original is rusted.
Step 4: Test each circuit at the connector
With a helper working the truck's lights, use a test light from the connector pins to ground to confirm power for running lights, left turn, right turn, and brakes. Note which circuit is dead.
Step 5: Trace the dead circuit toward the light
Follow the dead wire along the frame, checking junctions and any spots where it passes through holes or brackets. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or corroded splices and repair with heat-shrink connectors.
Step 6: Test and reseal the light housings
Check the bulb and the ground at each light housing. Replace failed LED modules or bulbs, and reseal the housing so moisture doesn't cause the fault to return.
Step 7: Verify all functions before towing
Recheck running lights, both turn signals, brake lights, and the license plate light together. All should work steadily with no dimming or flicker before you hit the road.
